Welcome to Distance Learning
Need a flexible schedule? Have a full-time job? These are not reasons to keep you from learning something new. In today’s society it is becoming harder and harder for students to make it to a traditional class at a certain time. Unfortunately, this has caused many to avoid furthering their education.
At RCC, we believe everyone should have the same opportunity to advance, and this is why we are working hard to create a distance learning program that exceeds expectations. Online learning offers you the opportunity to take certain classes in a virtual environment.
Currently there are a few programs that can be completed by taking half of the required courses online. Please see the Programs Offered page for more information on these programs. We plan to continue enhancing our online presence and soon will offer complete certificates and degrees online. Whether you are interested in taking a single course or an entire program, you are in the right place, but there are a few things you should consider.
Online courses are not for everyone. There is often a misconception that an online class is “easier” than a traditional class because there are no set meeting times. This is far from the truth. An online class is comparable with a traditional course, but students often find they spend more time actively working in an online class.
At RCC, we offer online classes through Moodle. You may be interested in taking a few minutes to navigate the Online Orientation course to get an idea of what you will be working in. If you decide you want to take a course online, you will be required to complete the Moodle Student Orientation before you will be able to register for it. Once you are accepted at RCC, you should be automatically enrolled in the course when you account is created.
You will also want to take into consideration the internet access available to you. It is highly recommended that you use a wired high-speed connection for your online classes. Also, if you decide to take a course where certain software is required, you will need to be able to furnish yourself with that software. At RCC, we strive to give each student a positive learning environment and work hard, regardless of the delivery method, to help you succeed.
Distance Learning is a formal educational process in which the majority of the instruction occurs when student and instructor are not in the same place, but not always online. Rockingham Community College offers Distance Learning courses in a variety of formats to meet the needs of our students.
- Online – An online course is delivered exclusively via the Internet.
- Hybrid – A hybrid course has an online component and scheduled, mandatory class (es) that meet on campus at specific times. The instructor will identify specific days and times that require campus attendance.
- Telecourse – Any course in which video cassettes or DVDs are required viewing for successful completion of the course and which are integrated into the course materials.
- Videoconference – A course offered between two or more sites using video conferencing equipment. Students need to be present at a campus site.
See the General Distance Learning Information page for more specific information regarding Distance Learning at RCC.

The sessions will be held in the AT3 (Advanced Technologies Building, Room 106). Use this form to register for one of the sessions.
